A good recording doesn't start with the record button, but with listening. Every production requires a unique approach. Sometimes the magic happens in an intimate studio setting, sometimes during a live performance where the interaction between musicians takes center stage.
By paying attention to the space, the lineup, and the atmosphere, a recording is created that not only sounds clear but also preserves the character of the performance.
Studio Recording
A controlled environment offers the opportunity to work on a recording in detail. There is room to experiment with sound, dynamics, and arrangement, while the spontaneity of the performance is preserved.
Whether it involves a singer-songwriter, a small ensemble, or separate overdubs: every recording is tailored to the music and the musicians standing in front of it.
Live Recording
Some performances cannot be repeated. It is precisely the interaction between musicians and the energy of the moment that make a live recording special.
From an intimate living room concert to a performance at a unique location: with a mobile recording setup, I can come to the location to record and capture the atmosphere of the moment as faithfully as possible.
How I work
The right atmosphere
Every production starts with listening. What does the song require? What atmosphere suits it? And how can we create an environment where musicians feel at ease?
The right microphone in the right place
Not every voice, guitar, or room requires the same approach. Depending on the source, I carefully select the microphones that best support the character of the music. Sometimes this calls for a transparent condenser microphone, and sometimes for the warmth of a ribbon or tube microphone.
Attention to space and acoustics
The space in which music is played is at least as important as the instrument itself. That is why I pay close attention to the acoustics, the arrangement of musicians, and the balance between them. Small adjustments can make a big difference in how a recording ultimately feels.
A natural approach
I do not strive for perfection for the sake of perfection, but for a recording that remains credible. A shallow breath, subtle dynamics, or the interaction between musicians can actually contribute to the power of a performance.
